Who is Anthony Burns?
Anthony Burns’ story is one of resilience, courage, and the relentless pursuit of freedom. Born into enslavement in Stafford, Anthony faced adversity and hardship, working in a stone quarry and enduring the separation of his family. His bold escape to Massachusetts, seeking freedom, ignited a historic legal battle that stirred a national movement for abolition.
Despite the challenges and the Fugitive Slave Act threatening his liberty, Anthony's story became a beacon of hope. The immense support he received from over 50,000 Bostonians showcased the power of solidarity and the fight against injustice. Ultimately, through the unwavering determination of compassionate individuals, Anthony Burns found his freedom.
His journey didn’t end with liberation; it was the beginning of a remarkable path. Anthony pursued education at Oberlin College, breaking barriers and becoming a pioneer as one of the first African Americans from Stafford to attain a college education. He later embraced his calling as a minister in Canada, leaving a legacy of resilience and perseverance.
Anthony Burns’ remarkable journey serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the strength found in perseverance, hard work, and determination. In honor of his spirit, the fifth-grade class of 2019 crafted a motto that echoes his values, inspiring our school community to embody these principles every day.
Anthony Burns' legacy lives on in our aspirations, encouraging us to persist, work hard, and remain determined in the face of challenges. His story reminds us that education, perseverance, and the pursuit of justice can pave the way for a brighter future. As we honor his memory, let us continue to uphold these ideals, shaping a community where determination and resilience thrive.

Discipline Plan
ABES School-wide Discipline Plan: Relevant, Realistic, Respectful
Creating a Positive Learning Environment at Anthony Burns ES
At Anthony Burns ES, fostering a positive and safe learning environment for all students is our priority. We firmly believe in the potential of every child and are committed to working with them daily. To ensure a conducive atmosphere for learning and cater to the diverse needs of our students, we have implemented a school-wide discipline plan that aligns with our values of respect, responsibility, and growth.
Classroom-Specific Management Plans:
- Each classroom teacher has devised a unique management plan tailored to their classroom environment. We encourage parents to acquaint themselves with these plans by engaging in discussions with the teachers or reviewing them on our school fusion website.
Embracing Learning from Misbehavior:
- We approach misbehavior as a valuable learning opportunity for students to reflect, correct their actions, and make better choices in the future.
- Utilizing logical consequences (such as "break it/fix it" and temporary loss of privileges) helps students understand the impact of their actions while fostering responsibility.
Empowering Students with a "Take a Break" Space:
- Recognizing the need for students to regain focus or calm down, each classroom offers a designated "take a break" space. This space allows students a moment to reset, regain composure, and refocus on their learning.
Additional Intervention Steps:
- Collaborative Intervention: In case a student's behavior persists, teachers will collaborate to offer a temporary "rest stop" of no more than ten minutes. This allows the student time to calm down, refocus, and rejoin the class positively.
- Parental Engagement: If a student requires a "rest stop," parents will be promptly notified by the classroom teacher to ensure transparent communication and support.
Adherence to Student Code of Conduct:
- Any violation of the Student Code of Conduct, as outlined by Stafford County Public Schools, will be subject to administrative action.
- Students found in violation will receive a Student Action report and may be subject to additional disciplinary measures as necessary, in accordance with established protocols.
At Anthony Burns ES, we are dedicated to creating a warm, inclusive, and nurturing environment where every student can thrive. Together, with collaborative efforts from teachers, parents, and students, we aim to uphold our values and ensure a safe and positive learning journey for all.
